LeNSE History, Business Organisation and Management

Background and Brief History

Learning Network South East (LeNSE) is one of the JANET Regional Networks. During the late 1990's, as part of UKERNA's SuperJANET4 project, the UKERNA contracts with individual educational institutions (to provide connectivity to JANET) were replaced by contracts with regional networks operators. In 1998, a consortium of ten Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the south of England agreed to develop a regional network for the area and LeNSE Ltd. was the company formed by this consortium to run the network. The founder members of this consortium, and now the shareholders of LeNSE Ltd., are listed under Members & Customers. The current nominated Board members are listed below.

LeNSE employs a full time Chief Executive Officer Mike.Byrne@lense.net.uk, and a full time Network Operations Manager Ewan.Quibell@lense.net.uk.

Management arrangements

The LeNSE Board agreed the following management arrangements at its meeting in September 2002:

  • LeNSE Board of Directors

    The Board meets three times per year to conduct formal company business. These meetings are also used to further cooperation and information sharing between members and, in this context, will be held at different member locations. The current board directors are:

  • LeNSE Executive Committee

    The LeNSE Executive Committee meets monthly to conduct normal business and to discuss proposals and issues prior to consideration by the Board. The membership of the LEC comprises the LeNSE Chair, the LeNSE Chief Executive Officer, and two other directors by election. The current Executive Committee members are:

  • LeNSE Technical Group

    The Network Operations Manager convenes this group, which comprises senior technical staff from member institutions. The Group's liaison helps ensure effective communication on technical strategy and practice and encourages greater involvement in LeNSE matters beyond the nominated Director. The liaison also encourages greater cooperation and information sharing among technical staff.
